Eagle Nebula — Pillars of Creation

Located approximately 7,000 light-years away in the constellation Serpens, the Eagle Nebula contains one of the most recognizable structures in astrophotography: the Pillars of Creation.

These enormous columns of gas and dust are among the most iconic structures in the deep sky.

For this photograph, I wanted to show the pillars in their surrounding environment rather than simply reproduce an already familiar iconic image.

The Pillars of Creation

The Pillars are made primarily of gas and dust. Their dramatic appearance comes in part from the contrast between these dense structures and the radiation from young stars around them.

The light we receive today began its journey thousands of years ago.

From starlight to image

This region contains an enormous amount of detail at different scales.

Processing allows those structures to be brought out gradually while preserving the depth of the pillars, the brighter regions, and the surrounding field of stars.

Matte Dibond Aluminum
Rigid and durable, with a matte finish that reduces reflections while preserving the details of the background sky and the fine details of the stars.

Premium Acrylic Glass
A glossy finish that adds depth and luminosity to the image. It gives the stars and the brightest regions of the nebula a stronger presence. Not recommended for sizes smaller than 40 × 60 cm (16 × 24"), due to the mounting system being visible through the four corners of the image.
