The Elephant Trunk Nebula

Located approximately 3,000 light-years away in the constellation of Cepheus, the Elephant's Trunk Nebula is a vast structure of gas and dust shaped by the stars surrounding it.

Its name comes from the long dark column that stretches across the region and, when viewed from this angle, resembles an elephant's trunk. This dust column extends across several dozen light-years. It is constantly exposed to the radiation of massive stars located nearby.

This photograph particularly highlights the contrast between the regions of dark dust and the illuminated areas of gas surrounding them.
