The Wizard Nebula

This image reveals the Wizard Nebula, a vast star-forming region surrounding the open cluster NGC 7380. Its clouds of gas are sculpted and illuminated by the young stars at their heart, giving rise to luminous swirls and deep dust structures.

Through the lens, this immense expanse of gas appears like a cosmic sculpture. The luminous regions are shaped by the radiation of young stars, while clouds of dust interrupt the light and draw the complex contours of the nebula.

A window onto a region of the Milky Way that we could never observe in this way with the naked eye.

From Light to Image

An astrophotograph like this is not the result of a single exposure.

The different exposures are calibrated and then combined to extract the signal accumulated throughout the imaging sessions. The processing then allows the colors, contrast, and details of the nebula to be gradually refined.

The final result is therefore a photographic interpretation of this region of the sky, gradually built from its light.
